schema:description 2 | "Behemotops katsuiei is a primitive desmostylian that was recorded as a new species in 2000. It is thought to have lived about 25 million years ago. The specific name katsuiei derives from the Yabuki brothers, who discovered it. The discovery of another species, Behemotops proteus, on the West Coast of North America revealed that primitive desmostylians such as Behemotops were distributed widely in the North Pacific. The order Desmostylus belong to the Tethytheria, part of the Afrotheria, a wide assemblage of mammals that originated in Africa. The Tethytheria consist of the orders Proboscidea, Sirenia, and Desmostylus. The Yabuki Brothers (the elder Mr. Katsumi Yabuki and the younger Mr. Katsuie Yabuki) are local fossil hunters and have discovered many marine mammal fossils. The Desmostylus in the Ashoro fossil fauna consist of two species: Ashoroa laticosta and Behemotops katsuiei....(more)" |
