種小名の laticosta(幅広の肋骨)のとおり、幅広い肋骨を持つことが特徴。 ...(more)"
schema:description"Ashoroa (Ashoroa laticosta) is a genus of primitive desmostylians discovered in 1976 and recorded as a new genus and species in 2000. Species of the genus Desmostylus were marine mammals that inhabited the North Pacific from about 30 million to about 10 million years ago. As the specific name laticosta (meaning “broad ribs”) indicates, their ribs were broader than those of other desmostylians. The holotype is one of the oldest desmostylians and is thought to have lived about 28 million years ago. It is a specimen important for unraveling the distribution and ecology of Desmostylus.Ashoroa is the first fossil of a large animal to be discovered in Ashoro. The discovery triggered discoveries of members of the Ashoro fossil fauna, which consist of primitive desmostylians, toothed whales, and baleen whales....(more)"
