schema:description"Taikicetus inouei is a baleen whale species that lived about 15 million years ago. The fossil pictured here is a replica of the skull. The species was discovered in Taiki Town and named after Mr. Kiyokazu Inoue, who discovered the type specimen. He also found Allodesmus uraiporensis. Extant baleen whales were preceded by baleen whales from the family Cetotheriidae and more broadly by somewhat primitive baleen whales from the genus Cetotherium. Taikicetus inouei belongs to the genus Cetotherium and has the primitive traits of the genus. The extant Caperea marginata (pygmy right whale) is the only living relic of the family Cetotheriidae....(more)"
