schema:description"Churyo Sato (1912–2011) was a sculptor who was born in Miyagi Prefecture and spent his childhood in Hokkaido until moving to Tokyo in 1932. His encounter with works by sculptors such as Rodin and Maillol led him to study sculpture at the Tokyo Fine Arts School (today’s Tokyo University of the Arts). He used people around him, women and children as models and attracted attention for his style of sculpture that showed a strong sense of life. He was also internationally acclaimed to the extent that he held a solo exhibition at the Musée Rodin in France in 1981. The work pictured here was modeled after his daughter.
