schema:description 2 | "Hakyo Kakizaki (1764–1826) was the fifth son of Sukehiro Matsumae, the lord of the Matsumae Domain, and was adopted by the Kakizaki family, whose head served as the chief retainer of the lord. Hakyo studied painting under Shiseki So of the Nanpin school in Edo, and later studied Maruyama school painting in Kyoto. He painted superb bird-and-flower paintings and beautiful woman paintings all the while serving as the chief retainer of the domain. The work pictured here is a 12-part folding screen pasted with bird-and-flower paintings and human figure paintings in which Hakyo excelled, including crane and tortoise, Yang Guifei and the Tang Emperor Xuanzong, a mandarin duck, and reeds and duck. In his later years, Hakyo was nicknamed Okyo Matsumae because his painting style influenced by Okyo Maruyama, the founder of the Maruyama school, known for its realistic paintings.
